09/4/2009. Above is a photo of our BR class J21 fitted with the production version of our latest Easi-Rider chassis.  The loco chassis is fitted with hornblocks on the leading axle and the middle and rear axles pivot on a compensation unit that incorporates the drive train.

The redesigned brake pivots are integral with the footplate support brackets and the brake hangers and shoes are copied from the works drawings.  The outside brake rigging is prototypical and complements the new brake gear.  Following established Easi-Rider practice, the brake gear is removable to facilitate driving wheel fitting.

The frames are full profile where possible and sport a detailed firebox lower portion and ashpan. Full profile frames greatly enhance the appearance of the loco as they hide the back of the driving wheels.

This image shows the loco and tender chassis complete with the motor in position.  The generously proportioned frames allow the Mashima motor to sit between the frames.   The production etch has ben modified to make the brake rigging assembly much simpler and has added even more detail to the rear pull levers.

The motor used on the prototype is a Mashima 1420 (Not supplied) but requires the body casting to be opened out to 14mm to clear the motor.  Not a major task but if you don't fancy this then a Mashima 1220 will fill the bill and the body won't need to be modified.  If you order one of these kits you'll need to specify whether you'll be using the Mashima 1420 or 1220 motor as the 1220 requires a Ø1.5mm bore worm and the 1420 uses a Ø2.0mm bore worm.

The tender chassis has prototypical double pull rods for the brakes along with a realistic brake hanger and shoe assembly.  If assembled correctly, the brake gear is completely removable.  the brake shoes are very close to whel rims for added realism without being a source of short circuits.  the chassis was designed around 3'-91/4" x 12 spoke wheels (Ø15.00mm) but consideration was given to the fact that these may not be readily available so the brake shoe profile allows the use of Ø16.00mm wheels.

Photo © Peter Stanger  This image shows the production chassis under a 3,038g tender from a Class J27 loco.  The tender hand brake mechanism can be seen at bottom LH corner of the image.  The production chassis has greatly enhanced ride qualities over the prototype by having less static friction (stiction).  On a model loco like the J21 where the tender weighs approximately 80% of the loco weight, this greatly enhances the loco's load hauling capacity without having to resort to adding weight to the loco.

This Easi-Rider Chassis kit is available for sale direct from 52F Models now.  Price £55.00 including 1st class postage, UK Mainland only.  Overseas carriage will be at cost. Please make all cheques payable to "Peter Stanger".
